How to take the exam?

A step-by-step guide to registering for CELPIP, what to bring on test day, and what to expect during the exam.

CELPIP is offered at test centers across Canada and in select locations worldwide. The entire exam is computer-based, so there's no handwriting or paper involved. Here's exactly how to get from registration to results.

Step-by-step registration

  1. 1

    Choose your test type

Decide between CELPIP-General (all 4 skills) and CELPIP-General LS (Listening + Speaking only). Most permanent residency applications require the General test.

  2. 2

    Create a My CELPIP account

Go to celpip.ca and register for an account. You will need a valid email address and your ID information.

  3. 3

Select a test date and location

Choose an available test center near you, or select Online Proctored Testing (OPT) if available in your region. Check seat availability early — popular dates fill up weeks in advance.

  4. 4

    Pay the registration fee

The fee for CELPIP-General is approximately CAD $280. Payment is made online by credit card. Confirm your booking to receive a confirmation email.

  5. 5

    Prepare your documents

You must bring the same government-issued photo ID used during registration. Accepted IDs include a passport, permanent resident card, or provincial/territorial driver's license.

  6. 6

    Arrive on test day

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. You will check in, have your ID verified, and be seated at a computer workstation.

  7. 7

    Take the exam

All four sections are completed in one sitting with short scheduled breaks. You will use a headset for Listening and Speaking tasks.

  8. 8

    Receive your scores

Scores are available in your My CELPIP account within 4–8 business days. You can purchase additional score reports to send directly to IRCC or professional bodies.

On test day — what to know

  • Accepted IDYour ID must match exactly what you submitted during registration. Expired IDs are not accepted.
  • No personal items at your deskPhones, bags, and notes must be stored in a locker. Scratch paper may be provided by the test center.
  • Headset requiredA headset is provided at the test center for Listening and Speaking. Do not bring your own.
  • No retake on the same dayIf you are not satisfied with your scores, you must re-register for a future test date. There is no same-day retake option.

Tip: Check seat availability 6–8 weeks before your immigration deadline. Test centers in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary often sell out several weeks in advance.
